This collaboration between New Jersey poet Marina Careirra and Sarasota fiber artist Sheryl Haler was completed in April 2021.
Marina’s Statement: I was honored to be part of this project and especially to work with such a phenomenal assemblage artist as Sheryl. As I watched her piece unfold week by week, I gathered the lines I wanted to incorporate in my poem as the artwork revealed itself and so I feel like the poem was “stitched together.” This is similar to how memory works and is showcased in both the art and poem.
Sheryl’s Statement: It was humbling to work with someone who has such a gift for descriptive language. Marina’s poetry conjured so many powerful images for me that visualizing this piece was a joyful process. Her focus and insight into how each of our individual heritages impact the lives that we live now especially relates to how I have always approached my work: reflecting on the past to think about how we live in the present, and how we may approach the future.
