Dislocation
This project features artist Maryse Lortscher from Sarasota and poet Terry Ann Thaxton from Winter Springs Florida. They completed this collaboration in July 2022 and both were honored to work together.
Maryse wrote: “Collaborating with poet Terry Ann has been invigorating. I was truly inspired by the way she perceives the world, and I was pleased with our choices of subject matter. We agreed about her being the “beacon” and pointing me in the right direction. I picked images and selected those that match our subject.
I explicitly and implicitly think about composition. What ties the work together is the formal approach (form vs. content) dealing with structure using a grid-like composition. I use mixed media: intertwining layers and shapes refers to the complexity of existence, the chaos in our world and within oneself as a reaction. My work fits with our contemporary culture where visuals are paramount.”
Terry Ann wrote: “The poem centers on the sense of dislocation during the social unrest, political instability, and lockdowns over the past couple of years. The poem’s speaker searches for ways to undo the dislocation of experience by looking for her connection to others and to herself.
Much of my writing focuses on mining the past to transform the future, specifically focusing on challenging the traditional female roles that suppress women and children. My writing is a desperate search for stability of the self within the ever-changing landscape of Florida.”
